Unconventional Christians

Have you ever wished your church would use more Mumford & Sons during worship? Were you ever confused that friends don’t consider The Lord of the Rings to be Christian literature? Did you ever have to bite your tongue when someone asked about the last inspirational movie you saw and you almost told them something by Judd Apatow?

You’re not alone. By my definition, you’re an Unconventional Christian - someone who recognizes God in every part of life, not just the things sold in your local Parable bookstore. You can see Jesus in the beauty of an infinite sky, but you can also find Him in comic books, sci-fi dramas, modern art and mainstream rap. You don’t shy away from rated-R movies because you have the ability to see the forest despite the trees. And while you hold true to your morals and convictions, you tend to be open-minded and can hold meaningful conversations with believers and non-believers alike.
As Christians we’re called to be in the world, not of the world, meaning that we should be a part of the society around us, but not let it define who we are. Hence the founding verse, Romans 12:2 :
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
In other words: be peculiar. Don’t be like everyone else; be the person God wants you to be. For when you do, you will be blessed.

This blog is all about examining the world around you and finding God in every crevasse. It’s about thinking different, acting different, and seeing things different. I’ll be posting 3 times a week (hopfully) - a devotion inspired by some media or pop culture topic on Mondays, scripture and a short Bible study on Wednesdays, and a Sticky Quote on Fridays.
